What would you do if someone stole your images?


A funny thing happened to me this past week; I got a short email titled "Copyright Infringement - Possibly", that read:


"Unless you've given permission, I think someone is using your images.

I see no credits or byline and am suspicious."

(A link was provided)

(I'm keeping the guardian angel's name anonymous but am very grateful!)

So I follow the link and low and behold there were my images promoting another photographer's workshop in Colorado...

I wrote in his comment section, asking that the photos be removed immediately since he had no right to use them (but a lot of nerve!). I also posted a screen shot of it on my FB page...it touched a sensitive point with my friends because not only are they decent human being, most of them are photographers and artists themselves...I was very touched by their support!

The photos were changed in less then 30 min (and replaced with someone else's ?...), my comment was removed and I was blocked from being able to further comment on that site...NO apology was sent...

Has anything like that ever happened to you (that you know of)?

    Damn that sucks, but it's awesome at the same time! Great to know your work is being used as a primary attractor and also great to know you have such an alert, educated, and supportive group of followers looking out for you! What a wonderful story! (:

    I have had it happen to me 3 times. Once my images were used to advertise a rave in LA. The next they were used on a poster for Riga Fashion Week in Latvia. Most recently, some guy was using my images as his own to advertise HIS photography.
    I am glad you got them taken down. You have great friends and supporters!

    All photographers have to be wary of this. It happens a lot, especially to the best photographers.

      I know what you mean...once you put anything on line, there is a fair chance of it being "stolen"...not that that's OK, just the way it is...

    wow I confronted one guy who was using my images at the track as well as others from other photographers to get Media credentials and access to the race track and events. I confronted him about it and he removed my images and me as well from his FB. I haven't heard from him again. I'm not sure if hes up to it again cause I have not seen anything from him but yeah its scary to think that people are being drawn in or set up with meeting or work with your images. That would be a nightmare to hear something go wrong and they point out your work after the aka photographer makes a run for it. I'm happy that you have supporters and fans who can spot your work and those who are phony.

    I had the reverse happened - I hired a wardrobe stylist based on his excellent portfolio...ended up he didn't dress any of the models, he was just the assistant - but took FULL credit for the work! That did not go over well, he was pretty useless...
